People claim that Trek’s are the most middle of the road mountain bike design possible and this is true. This will be like when I first tried single speeding or fat biking, not a comprehensive review of the bike, just what does _ discipline bike actually do for an amateur/enthusiast such as myself or you? BUT, as the day progressed I realised this would not necessarily mean a review of the Session 8 itself, but rather a downhill bike in general. ![]() Maydena is one of a few places in Australia I feel comfortable writing a review for a downhill bike since the up lift service is fast enough to get sufficient laps in, the ability to weave trails together means testing technical, flow and jumping ability is possible in few runs, and I can ramp up difficulty as I get accustomed to the bike within a single review day. Which is where we find the humble Session 8, among the fleet of rental bikes at Maydena Bike Park along with the Slash 8 (new 2021 models now in fleet), Remedy 8, some Fuel EX in small frame sizes, and the Trek Rail for some e-MTB action. Would I want to review more downhill bikes? Going to need more skill sessions at Maydena… With downhill trails and friends being in short supply in Wagga, plus my non-existent experience with mountain bikes, I have never really talked about my 30 minutes of lame on the Session. Have I ridden a dedicated downhill bike? Yes, a short spurt on a 2016 Trek Session 8 which was shortly located in Wagga which sat next to a certain 2016 Trek Farley 5. Have I ever wanted to own downhill? Not really, since that would require friends with shuttle vehicles or living close enough to a gravity park to warrant such a bike. ![]() So in 2021, being presented with a unique opportunity while down in Tasmania, I took on a one day review of a new beast, the 2021 Trek Session 8! As we know the bike industry went into over drive, mountain bikes became harder to buy or even demo since distribution networks crawled to a halt thanks to factories shutting down, then shipping lanes ground to a stop, and then local bike shops and bike parks had to change their priorities to cater to demand. I had the intention of reviewing the Trek Top Fuel back in 2020 to complete the trilogy of Trek’s most successful dual suspension mountain bikes. ![]()
